Last Week In History: July 18, 1976. This show (no secret to many of you, but new to me as of four days ago) is warm and mellow and sweet. Both versions below sound great to me. I can never quite figure out why a show speaks to me more than others -- is it truly better playing and singing than other nights? A better or different kind of recording? Is it what I ate for breakfast? -- but one way or another, I can't stop listening to this one. Reviews cite the second set, especially Stella, but the first is gorgeous, too. https://archive.org/details/gd76-07-18.sbd.ferguson.244.sbeok.shnf https://archive.org/details/gd76-07-18.sbd.bertha.14838.sbeok.shnf

"Maybe the best of 76"
I have been listening my way thru 76 and I got tell you
"Maybe the best of 76" applies to about every freakin' night.
I pretty much gave out 5 stars for just about every show.
Any down side?- it is with the SOUND recordings here and there.
But, considering these shows were taped 40+ years ago
Yet for the most part the boards are incredible!

The band, Wow, the band rocks!!!
The late summer shows look for Help>Slip>Franklin's
Later in the fall-The Other One
Scarlet Begonia's 9/25/76
All things taken into account
Hard to say why one show appeals more than another?
There is really nothing the Dead played in 1976 that i haven't enjoyed. (Maybe one U.S. Blues encore too many)
But when they are on they can hit the MELTDOWN anytime.
or just blow me away on a ballad..
More Dead!

76 get a "bad" rap for being slow and predictable, but several shows really rock...06-11, 06-29, 7-16,17,18, 9-25, 10-09, 12-31, few others in there too

The rap's a bad one I'll agree -huge fan here of June '76 in particular- but there *are* a few shows that gave birth to this idea.... 8/4/76 is a remarkable yawner for a band 6-8 weeks removed from such lovely stuff.

Reade,

Not sure why they only played like two "east coast summer tour" shows that year? but to me it is the steady flow of shows on the road that turns the band into a single unit of rock n roll excellence.

I've been on about how much I love the "mellow" Dead of 76 for as long as I have been on this forum . But they could put the hammer down this year , as you point out .

Here is an old thread on the topic of 76. Strat, I think your current self agrees with your 2005 self.

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

But at least you don't have to say this:

I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was younger
I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was stronger

76 is also one of my favorite years. The playing was incredibly tight and inspired and Jerry was just on fire. Not as bombastic as 77, but just some of the sweetest and laid back jams they ever played. For me this year was Keith's last stand. By the time 77 came around, I found him to be really fading to the background, only occasionally shining through; but 76 has just some stellar shows from him.

Also some of the best matrix sources ever made come from this year.

(all of the above, as always, is IMHO. My HO, of course, is the right one, but please feel free to be wrong and have a different HO)
